Madrid
Cayón Gallery is pleased to present “Split Second (Mirror) and Other Works,” the first solo exhibition of artist Anthony McCall at the gallery. The exhibition will take place across both Cayón spaces in Madrid. At Calle Blanca de Navarra 9, one of McCall’s signature projection works will be shown—hybrids between sculpture, cinema, and drawing. Meanwhile, at number 7 on the same street, a selection of photographs and earlier works will be on display.

The viewer of the work is immersed in a theatrical atmosphere—a hybrid between the ethereal and the solid—where McCall creates volumetric forms using smoke and light. In the Madrid-based work “Split Second (Mirror)” (2018), the element of reflection plays a fundamental role, as the solidity of light is doubled when projected onto a large-scale mirror. This mirroring introduces a baroque quality to the artist’s already complex installation.

McCall, who significantly refers to “solid light” as the medium of his work, also explores the immateriality of the artistic object. The viewer enters an installation where they are surrounded by sensations—and by their own reflection in the mirror—blurring the boundaries between the physical and the intangible.

The architecture of the gallery will be used by the artist as a framework that defines the boundaries of the work, creating a subtle threshold between the visual perception of the piece and the viewer’s full physical interaction with it.
