Galería Cayón is pleased to present together Fred Sandback (Bronxville, New York, 1943 - New York, 2003), and Herminio Álvarez (La Caridad, Asturias, 1945), two artists whose artistic language and perception of space resemble and complement each other in multiple ways.

In this dialogue, both artists are nourished by the most minimalist concepts, faithful to their discourse and trajectory, where sculpture is diluted in space, like almost an ephemeral installation.

Installation view: Sandback/Herminio, Cayón, Blanca de Navarra 9, Madrid, 2020-2021.

This first dual exhibition in the space of Blanca 9, offers the opportunity to observe how, coming from different origins, they reach similar conclusions regarding the balance, tension and rupture of the sculptural material opacity.

Sandback broke with the idea that the sculpture should be a solid element and transform it into an ethereal thing, due to the use of acrylic and very thin metallic yarn. He laid off all kind of content and opted for the pure presence, for the simplicity of the sculpture shape. Thus, the works by Sandback evoke a fragile architecture that seems to be, almost, intangible.

Herminio´s works are based, from the beginning of his seld-educated career, on the physics and geometric research. He explores concepts such as volatility and uncertainty, happening to the eyes of the spectator as an implausible element. The simplicity and brightness of the shapes of the sculptures, show the link of Herminio’s work with Suprematism. Also, through the diagonal element, he plays with the feeling of unsteadiness in most of his works.
