Galería Cayón is pleased to present the third solo exhibit by David Magán (Madrid, 1979) at its two locations in Madrid (Blanca de Navarra 7 & 9). This exhibit by the Madrid-born sculptor, who received the II NH Collection of Contemporary Art Award at the art fair ARCOmadrid 2016, explores the visual and spatial possibilities of sculpture through a series of free-standing works and walled installations.

Throughout his career, David Magán has been fascinated by the embodiment of transparency and color in space. He began by using glass for his earliest work, relying on the physical properties of his medium to capture color in air.

Thus, while he utilizes a millennia-old material, Magán creates pieces that are entirely contemporary. In recent years, he has broadened his explorations by incorporating methacrylate into his work, which allows him to obtain identical results while offering fresh possibilities.

Magán’s art must be regarded not only as an artistic activity, but also as a meticulous scientific endeavor, with each piece being the result of an intensive research process. The fruit of his labor is a body of work expressive of the fusion of architecture, painting, and sculpture.

The works by Magán transcend the traditional concept of sculpture as a static element, both limited and unchanging. Instead, they reveal the art form’s endless chromatic and luminous potential, well beyond pure materiality. The pieces are meant to be encountered as geometric modules in constant flux; they alter space in response to the impact of light and the changing place and motion of the observer, thus evidencing the interdependency of a work of art, a body, and space.

A sculpture is transformed into an event; color becomes an evolving circumstance, an experience linked to each movement the observer makes, while time contracts and expands, beyond boundaries, relentlessly at our step.

In 2016, David Magán presented Primary Interferences, a solo exhibit in Room B of the Art Center Tomás y Valiente (Centro Tomás y Valiente, CEART) in Fuenlabrada. The works on display were the result of his wide-ranging research on primary colors.

A catalogue, published regarding the current exhibit, features an essay by the distinguished British curator Lisa Le Feuvre, Head of Sculpture Studies at the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds (United Kingdom), from 2010 to 2017 and current Executive Director of The Nancy Holt & Robert Smithson Foundation, Santa Fe, New México, USA.
