Galería Cayón is pleased to present the fourth solo exhibit of Carlos Cruz-Diez (Caracas, 1923) to appear in the gallery. The exhibit will open on the 15th of September to coincide with the Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend. The exhibit also will celebrate the artist’s 93rd birthday and commemorate the 60th anniversary of his first solo exhibit in Madrid, at the Galería Buchholz. In light of these milestones, in addition to the gallery exhibit of his work, the artist will present his first ephemeral work in Spain, to be installed on the façade of one of the Blanca de Navarra locations.

Cruz-Diez will occupy the space which was inaugurated in February 2016 in Blanca de Navarra 9 (Madrid)—an old theater with 6-meter ceilings that was part of an adjacent convent—as well as the contiguous hall situated in Blanca de Navarra 7. Both spaces will contain works of recent creation with highly vibrant colors whose tonalities vary widely from side to side as the spectator moves around the exhibit area. Thus, the exhibit will become a pure occurrence of color, constituting a unique experience of the artistic discourse of Cruz-Diez.

The exhibit will feature several Physichromies, some of which arethree meters in length, as well as a number of Chromointerferences, and a Couleur à L’Espace (Color in Space) designed specifically for the occasion. Through these works, the viewer will experience both the saturation and the circumstance of color.

Within the last two years, Carlos Cruz-Diez has participated in the 2014 Liverpool Biennial and has been awarded the 2015 Turner Medal and the 2016 International Trebbia Award. His work can be found in the collections of some of the most prestigious museums in the world, including the Tate Modern, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris; and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

On the occasion of the exhibition, Galería Cayón is issuing a catalog that includes an interview with the artist by the prestigious critic and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, Codirector of Exhibits and Programs and Director of International Projects for the Serpentine Galleries in London.
