Carl Andre was born on September 16, 1935, in Massachusetts and studied at the Phillips Academy in Andover. He later moved to New York, where he met Frank Stella, an artist with whom he would share a studio and artistic experiences.

His sculptural work is part of the minimalist movement, which emerged in the United States in the 1960s. This movement advocated for the formal reduction of objects in order to explore their essence. The medium for this exploration was the use of industrial materials and processes, which completely eliminated the artist’s trace, focusing exclusively on the artistic object.

Through a deliberate combination of modular elements, Andre explores the boundaries of sculpture and space, giving great lightness to the heaviest materials.
