Joan Hernández Pijuan (Barcelona, Spain, 1931 - Barcelona, Spain, 2005) worked from his early years in the abstraction field. The artist -considered as one of the most important Spanish painters of the end of XX century- has been well-known, especially during the later years of his extensive career, for his monochrome pieces. He uses oil painting as an essential structuring of the space and the void in his work.

Hernández Pijuan's work is preserved in main collections such as: Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS), Madrid; Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), Barcelona; La Caixa Collection, Barcelona; Museum de Arte Abstracto Español, (Cuenca) or Guggenheim Museum, New York, among others.

He was awarded with the National Plastic Arts Award in 1981 and the National Graphic Art Award in 2005. In 1993, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), dedicated a retrospective titled “Hernández Pijuan. Spaces of silence, 1972-1992” and in 2003 the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) other titled: “Joan Hernández Pijuan. Returning to a known place, 1972-2002”.
