Jan Dibbets was born in 1941 in Holland. He studied at the Art Academy of Tilburg, starting his artistic career as a painter. In 1972 he represented the Netherlands in the 36th Venice Biennale.

Jan Dibbets was attracted by the way that the visual phenomena of reality are represented. He started this exploration in painting but during the late 60s he moved towards photography to analyse the perceptive problems in a conceptual way.

During the 70s he explored the perception and materialization of the colour in photography. His series colostudies introduced photography into the field of painting. His images show a colourful area, that fills completely the surface of the photography. They are all images of doors and cars that couldn´t be identify at first sight, due to this magnification.
