Carlos Cruz-Diez
Carlos Cruz-Diez (Caracas, 1923 – Paris, 2019) studied at the School of Fine Arts in Caracas between 1940 and 1945, later working as a professor of the History of Applied Arts.
His artistic reflection revolves around the study of color, understood as an autonomous reality independent of form and support in order to exist and be experienced. His works are conceived as dynamic pieces that change and transform depending on the viewer’s perspective, movement, and position.
Through the use of different materials that shift according to light and viewpoint, Cruz-Diez creates mobile pieces that never remain still. The experience of his works goes beyond mere observation, as the artist actively involves the viewer, turning them into an integral part of the artistic event. Many of his pieces literally aim to envelop the viewer, offering a direct experience of the power of color. Thus, in addition to works that move between painting and sculpture, Cruz-Diez has developed various installations that immerse the visitor in a chromatic downpour.
